"There's a half-breed on my bus . . ."

*Editor's note - Names have been changed or purposefully left out.

"There's a half-breed on my bus!"

Flabbergasted, I couldn't even respond to my husband at first.  "Why are you calling him that?!?!?!"

"That's what _____ called him.  Just wait."  And then he told me.

This little guy doesn't ever give me problems on the bus, but I knew he was having problems at school so I asked him to sit up front.

"Am I in trouble?"

"Nope.  Just trying to keep it that way.  Rough day?"

"Yes, sir.  How did you know?"

"Because Bro. Will knows things about things, bud."

He chuckled & said, "I like you a lot better than _____.  She was always putting me in bad situations and I kept finding trouble."

"Like what?"

"Like putting me with older kids, bullies.  She didn't like me."

"What makes you say that?"

"Got in a fight one day with ____!  He punched me in the nose, but I'm the one that got wrote up.  I'm telling you, Bro. Will, she didn't like me."

He sat in silence for a moment and then continued.

"She told me I was nothing but a stupid half-breed!  Bro. Will, the first time I saw you I thought you were a racist skinhead and would be even worse than her."

"Son, people are mean and hateful sometimes.  I'm so sorry that she acted that way.  You need to know that I won't tolerate that from anyone.  If something like that happens again, you need to let me know!"

At my next stop, I pulled out my iPhone and called _____ to me.  "Let me show you something.  See these kids?"

"Yes, sir.  They look like me!"

"These are the kids my wife & I are adopting.  We love them already just like we love our blood sons."

"Really?"

"Really!  They are our blood children, too, through the blood of Jesus Christ."

"Are you a preacher?"

"I'm a youth pastor."

"Well that makes sense.  I wondered why everybody called you Bro. Will!"

He returned to his seat with a smile.

The next day when _______ got on the bus he asked if he could sit next to N (our youngest son).

"Sure!"

He immediately began talking to N about the adoption & how we we're "getting kids just like him!"

"I started off by calling him THAT so you'd feel the same shock & disgust I did when he was telling me.  Makes me so angry that people can still be so stupid!"

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood."

So much of Dr. King's Dream has come true; but so much more is still to come.

  2. Satan's greatest accomplishment is keeping is blind to the truth... I'm so happy to see William take time to SHOW the truth to a child. I always want to tell people, "If you think you could look down your family tree and never find a dark-skinned person in it.. you're insane"

  3. It breaks my heart that children are put through this. I have found that children only know about being biased from the adults who teach it to them. So sad.
