Jesus is my favorite feminist.

This is happening. Feminisms Fest is happening right now. And I want to be a part of it.

I've started 6 count 'em 6 different posts about feminism tonight.

How do you reconcile what you thought with what you now know?

How do you pretend nothing has changed when everything has?

How do you articulate to others what is stirring so deep and screams so loud?

I can't. Maybe one day. But not now.

But Jesus can. And He did.

See He did nothing by chance, nothing by happenstance, nothing by accident.

So when He said,
"But go find my brothers and tell them,
'I am ascending to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God,'"(John 20:17),
He was deliberate.

Not only in the message,
but in the messenger.

He chose her.

He commissioned her.

He gave her the privilege of delivering the very first Resurrection sermon.

To a room full of men.

There's much I'm not ready to say, but I can say this - Jesus is my favorite feminist.

I am so honored to be included in Rachel Held Evans' Sunday Superlatives for March 3, 2013!

  • {Day 1} Feminism and Me: On Tuesday, February 26, link up at J.R. Goudeau’s blog, loveiswhatyoudo.com, and write about these questions: What is your experience with feminism? What’s a story or a memory or a person that you associate with that word? Why does it have negative or positive connotations for you? How do you define the term, either academically or personally? What writers have you read whose definitions you want to bring out? Or, if you don’t have a definition, what are some big questions you have?
  • {Day 2} Why It Matters: On Wednesday, February 27, link up at Danielle Vermeer’s blog, fromtwotoone.com, and write about these questions: What is at stake in this discussion? Why is feminism important to you? Are you thinking about your children or your sisters or the people that have come before you? Or, why do you not like the term? What are you concerned we’re not focusing on or we’re losing sight of when we talk about feminism? Why do you feel passionately about this topic?
  • {Day 3} What You Learned: On Thursday, February 28, link up at Preston Yancey’s blog, seeprestonblog.com, and write about these questions: What surprised you this week? What did you take away from the discussion? What blog posts did you find particularly helpful? What questions do you still have?

  3. Throughout history, God has chosen women to fulfill His purpose. He is no respecter of persons, leading whom He chooses, as He chooses, in His way, for His very own reasons. After all, who are we finite beings created in the image of God, to decide his mind? Well written, Deborah. :)

  5. She was there at this place of uncleanness. The men were in hiding. Makes sense to me -- the women could go about without nearly as much risk, doing the womanly chores related to cleaning the body, etc. And the men were in hiding. It was a privilege, but a privilege they paid for with their bravery.

  6. I'm still struggling with the word "feminist" because for me, it can sometimes have a negative connotation that goes against what, ultimately, I think original feminists were trying to accomplish.

I do agree that Jesus utilized women in a powerful way and he never failed to see their amazing worth.

I'm going to read this a few more times and mull on this. Thanks for giving me something to think about!

    1. I know exactly what you mean!

(Amy Lepine Peterson does a fantastic job explaining the metamorphosis feminism has under gone. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/christandpopculture/2013/02/the-f-word-why-feminism-is-not-the-enemy/ )

But I think the same thing could be said of the word Christian.

Thanks so much for taking time to visit & engage!
